Coaching College Readiness: Helping Students Advance Their Potential,
One Skill at a Time
Study Skills
More things we hear everyday around here:
-It's fine. The exam is online. I don't need to study.
-I looked over my notes. I don't understand why I did so badly!
-What do you mean I have to fill out the study guide? I thought the teacher did that for us?
-I thought I had good notes, but none of them were on the test.
If COVID taught students one thing, it was how to use their resources (aka: cheating!)
A great majority of rising or returning college students have not been taught basic study skills which can create big problems when it comes to finding success in higher education.
At a minimum, they lack the ability to:
-Take good notes and know what to do with them leading up to quizzes and exams
-Read and comprehend full texts, not just an AI-generated summary
-Think critically and draw independent conclusions, rather than regurgitating answers
-Study actively by creating study guides, instead of starring at pre-made Quizlets
-Use library databases for research
