Coaching College Readiness: Helping Students Advance Their Potential,
One Skill at a Time
Stress Management
Where's their grit? So many of our rising and returning college students are struggling with the expectations of higher education. They aren't used to a life where the possibility of failure exists, which can trigger feelings of self-doubt, anxiety and depression.
We hear students say things like:
- Forget it. I can't get an A, so why bother?
- I know I didn't do well on that exam. I should just drop out.
- Why is everyone else doing better than I am? I never see them studying!
- Everyone else has found their 'people', but I'm just stuck in my room all alone.
- When I get anxious, I just shut down and avoid everything.
We use REAL life examples of situations that past students have dealt with and explore ways to shift negative mindsets into growth mindsets to help reframe their 'stuck' narrative.
INSIGHT
What am I feeling? What am I thinking? What am I doing to help myself achieve a positive outcome vs. an unwanted outcome?
ROUTINES AND DAILY HABITS (sleeping, eating, exercise)
Am I going to sleep at a reasonable hour? Am I able to wake up on time? Am I eating regular meals? Am I finding time to exercise, even if it's just a small amount? Am I making good choices concerning alcohol and/or drugs?
REGULATING EMOTIONS
Can I identify my feelings? Am I able to regulate my emotions when needed? How can I accept feeling uncomfortable? How do I stop avoiding school, friends, etc. when things get hard? How do I handle being away from home
SOCIAL COMMUNICATION
Do I know how to handle conflict? Can I communicate with my peers and/or professors so that they understand me?
