One Skill at a Time
Self-Advocacy

I had a 504 in high school. Can't I just keep using that?
-
You keep telling me to go to my professor's office hours, but I don't want to until I have something to turn in.
-
I know I should get set up accommodations, but I don't want to use ADHD as an excuse.
-
They never told me that I needed to be working on that assignment!
-
I can't go talk to the professor. What am I supposed to say?!
Help!
So many students are uncomfortable reaching out to professors for help, especially if/when they're struggling in a class. Instead, they tend to avoid the situation, which only makes things worse!
During our time together, we actively roleplay and practice things like:
-
How to write a professional and respectful email. (Hint: It does not start with, "Hey")
-
What to ask/say during office hours with a professor or TA
-
How to access the accessibilities office for accommodation
-
How to talk about your learning style
